Animated GIF
A type of image file that can have flashing, blinking or moving pictures or text when it is animated. The image at the top of this website is an animated GIF.

Blog
A blog is like an online diary. It can be linked to your website so customers know what your business is doing, or you can have a personal blog. It could be about anything and you can put images, text and links on it.
Bookmark
If you find a website you like you can 'bookmark' it so that you can find it again easily. When you bookmark a website, it saves you having to remember the website address (or URL).
Browser
A browser is the programme you use to 'browse' the internet. It enables you to view web pages and websites. Most people use Internet Explorer or Firefox, though there are many other browsers available.
Clickable Image
A picture which can be cliked to take you to a different page or website. When your mouse hovers over a clickable image, the normal arrow icon will change to a hand icon, telling you there is a link to follow. An example of clickable images are the images to the left of the pages on this website.
Domain Name
The name that identifies a website. The domain name for this site is 'businesswebstart.co.uk'. To create a domain name, you need to choose the name you want, then choose what extension it has ( '.co.uk', '.com', '.net' etc). The finished domain name becomes your website URL.

E-Commerce
A way of buying or selling goods through a website on the internet. You may have seen websites with 'shopping carts'. These are e-commerce sites.
Email
Messages that are sent electronically over the internet from one email address to another. Text, images and attachments (documents etc) can be sent by email.

Hits
When someone visits your website, this counts as a 'hit'. Monitoring the hits on your website will enable you to record the website traffic you are getting. Analysing hits and traffic statistics on your website can help you improve your site and promotions.
Home Page
This is the front page of a website which normally gives an overview of what the website is about and it will show you how to get to areas of interest to you on the site.

Instant Messaging
Using a programme such as MSN Messenger, Skype or a chat facility (Instant Messenger) within another website to 'talk' online with people who are also using the same chat facility. You simply type your message in the chat box and then send it. It is instantly received and the other person can reply instantly. This is chatting online.
Internet
Millions of computers, all linked together to form a huge network. Used for viewing web pages, documents, transferring files between one computer and another, instant messaging, and much more.
Link
This can be a text link or a clickable image. When clicked it will take you to another page, email message, image or website. The mouse will change to a hand icon when you hover over a link which indicates it can be clicked.
Link Exchange
A link exchange is when you place a link to a website on your site, and they place a link to your site on theirs. It is a way to help increase your search engine page ranking. Link Exchanges are best when the content on the websites that are linked are relevant to each other.
Navigation
The way you move around the links and pages of a website.
Navigation Bar
Often found at the top or the left of a website. Contains links to the main parts of a website. The navigation bar appears on every web page within the website. The navigation bar for this site is found to the left of the page and contains links to 'Websites' 'Design' 'Admin Support' 'News' and 'Home'.
Page Ranking
A Page Rank simply means where your web page appears in the search engine results. When you want to find something on the internet, you use a search engine such as Google. You type in what you are looking for and it displays the results - which can be hundreds or thousands of pages. Normally people will click on the results that come on the first couple of pages. A website that appears on the first page has a high page ranking.
Pixel
Images on a computer screen and things you print are all made up of little dots. These dots are called pixels.
Search Engine
A search engine enables you to easily search the internet for information. Simply type in what you are looking for and the search engine will go off and look for all the websites that contain information relevant to your search. It is like an online directory. Websites have to be submitted to the search engine 'directory', so your search results will only include websites that have been submitted to that search engine.
Search Engine Optimisation / SEO
Search Engine Optimisation or SEO for short means optimising your website in order to increase your chances of getting a higher page ranking in the search engine results.
Traffic
Traffic is the amount of visits to your website. Traffic and hits can be analysed to measure the performance of a website, promotion individual page or layout.
URL
URL stands for Uniform Resource Locator. A URL is the website address or path to a document on the internet. The URL for this website is 'www.businesswebstart.co.uk'. The URL for the Websites page is 'www.businesswebstart.co.uk/websites'.
User Journey
A User Journey is the route someone who visits your website takes to get to a specific point on your website from the home page. For example - from the home page to the shopping cart page. You have to guide them through your website to make sure they find what they were looking for as easily as possible - creating a user journey.

If you have a website you want to put online, you will need web space. A Web Host rents out space and they host your website for you. There are many web hosting companies to choose from. This usually involves a monthly or annual fee.

A website is made up of any number of web pages. It can be jsut one page, or a series of linked pages. Each page is an online document is created using HTML. A web page can contain text, images, links, photos, clickable images, videos and more.
